The myth of the magic mileage limit

There is still a belief in Poland that a car with a mileage of over 200,000 kilometers is a "tired car". Meanwhile, for the large drive units our vans are equipped with, such mileage is often only half of their lifespan. The real challenge is not the kilometers, but the conditions in which they were covered.
Highway vs. City: Where does the car wear out?
Let's imagine the two most popular models in our offer:
  1. Grand Voyager 2.8 CRD (Trasy): Mileage 290,000 km. Mainly used on highways. The diesel engine operated at a constant, optimal temperature, which is crucial for the condition of the injection system and DPF filter. The gearbox rarely changed gears, and the suspension didn't struggle with potholes and curbs.
  2. Town & Country 3.6 Pentastar (Miasto): Mileage 110,000 km. Used for short distances: home, kindergarten, shopping. The engine rarely reached operating temperature (which encourages carbon build-up), and the sliding doors and on-board systems were used ten times more often than on the road.
Which one is in better condition? Despite the higher mileage, a highway car will usually be in much better mechanical condition. "City mileage" is much more destructive to components - from the starter, through the brakes, to the upholstery.

2.8 CRD engine – a long-distance runner who likes the route

The mentioned engine 2.8 CRD, installed in European versions of Grand Voyager, is a unit designed to swallow kilometers. If you see such a model with a mileage of 250-300 thousand km, but with full service history, don't be afraid of it. These are engines that, with proper care for oil and timing, can easily cover distances of half a million kilometers. Paradoxically, models with very low mileage, used only "around the chimney", may more often have problems with engine equipment.

Interior quality and year

  • Condition of the engine and accessories: In 2.8 CRD, check how it works when cold. Listen to the work culture in the V6 petrol engines.
  • Exchange history: Was the oil in the automatic transmission changed every 60-80 thousand? km? This is more important than the total mileage of the car.
  • Interior condition: Are the seats cracked? Do all Stow 'n Go systems run smoothly?
  • Bottom of the car: The condition of the suspension and the lack of corrosion on structural elements will tell you the truth about the car's past.
